1850 - Seventh Census of the United States

General Information
Between 1840 and 1850, five new states were added: Florida, Texas, Iowa, Wisconsin and California for a total of 31 states. In addition, four new territories were included: Oregon Territory, Minnesota Territory, New Mexico Territory and Utah Territory. No enumeration for the Unorganized Territory of the Great Plains was included.

For the first time, the census schedules listed the names of everyone in a household and included the following information for each person:

  • Name
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Color (race)
  • Birthplace
  • Occupation
  • Value of real estate
  • Whether married within the previous year
  • Whether deaf, dumb, blind, or insane
  • Whether a pauper
  • Whether able to read or speak English
  • Whether the person attended school within the previous year

(Note: No relationships were shown between members of a household.)
